What is auto insurance?
Auto insurance (or car insurance) helps protect the community from accidents caused by vehicles. Car accidents can cause a lot of property damage and result in large medical bills. Most states, including Minnesota, require a minimum level of insurance in order to drive legally on public roads.
Coverage required by law includes auto liability, which provides a specified amount of money to cover property damage and bodily injury you cause to another party. In MN, personal injury protection (PIP), underinsured liability, and uninsured liability are also required. PIP provides coverage for medical expenses and lost wages without regard to who is at fault. UM/UIM provides you bodily injury coverage when the at-fault driver has too little or no insurance.
There are many additional coverage options available that are not required by law but may be needed for other reasons. If you have an auto loan, for example, the lender usually requires comprehensive and collision coverage. Together, these coverages help ensure the loan is paid off if the vehicle is destroyed.
